Thread Count Truths: How to Recognise Quality Bedding

Thread count is one of the most misunderstood terms in bedding. Many shoppers see a higher number and assume it means better quality, softer fabric and longer-lasting sheets. In reality, thread count tells only part of the story.

If you are comparing thread count UK bedding, looking for a thread count duvet cover, or trying to understand what makes the best sheet quality, it helps to look beyond the number on the label.

A good duvet cover set is not defined by thread count alone. Cotton quality, yarn fineness, weave type, fabric weight, breathability and finishing all matter. A well-made 200 TC cotton percale duvet cover can feel fresher, smoother and more durable than a poorly made high thread count fabric.

At Leruum, our bedding is made from 100% cotton, with current collections including 145 TC ranforce and 200 TC percale duvet cover sets. We are also developing future 300 TC bedding, but only where the fabric meets our standards for breathable comfort, healthy sleep, durability and responsible production.

What Does Thread Count Mean?

Thread count, often written as TC, refers to the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It counts both vertical threads and horizontal threads.

For example, Leruum’s 145 TC ranforce fabric uses a 76 x 69 construction. This means 76 warp threads and 69 weft threads per inch, giving a total thread count of 145.

Our 200 TC percale fabric uses finer yarns and a denser construction, creating a smoother, lighter and more refined cotton feel.

In simple terms:

Fabric Type Thread Count Feel Best For
145 TC ranforce 145 TC Soft, breathable, strong Everyday cotton bedding
200 TC percale 200 TC Crisp, smooth, cool Premium breathable duvet covers
300 TC cotton 300 TC Finer, denser, smoother More elevated bedding, if woven correctly

The key phrase is “if woven correctly”. A higher number is not automatically better.

Is Higher Thread Count Always Better?

No. This is one of the biggest myths in bedding.

A high tc duvet cover set can be excellent, but only when the cotton, yarn and weave are also good. If poor quality yarns are packed tightly into the fabric, the result may feel heavy, less breathable and less comfortable over time.

A very high thread count can sometimes reduce airflow. This matters if you prefer natural, breathable bedding or if you tend to get warm at night. In the UK, where bedrooms can shift between cool winters and warmer summer nights, breathability is especially important.

This is why cotton quality guide advice should never focus only on thread count. The real question is not simply “how high is the thread count?” It is “How well is this fabric made?”

145 TC Ranforce: Strong, Breathable Everyday Cotton

Leruum’s 145 TC ranforce duvet cover sets are designed for everyday comfort. Ranforce is a cotton weave known for strength, breathability and reliable daily use.

It does not try to feel overly silky or artificially polished. Instead, it gives a natural cotton handle that works well for printed bedding, reversible designs and long-term washing.

A good 145 TC reinforced duvet cover is suitable for people who want:

  • Natural 100% cotton bedding
  • Breathable comfort through the year
  • Durable fabric for regular washing
  • Patterned duvet covers that hold their shape
  • A practical balance between quality and value

For example, our Sevilla Pink Floral Cotton Duvet Cover Bedding Set combines a floral side with a striped reverse, giving two looks in one cotton duvet cover set. The Sevilla Blue Floral Cotton Duvet Cover Bedding Set offers the same reversible idea in a calmer blue palette.

These are good examples of why thread count is only one part of quality. The cotton, print, weave, finish and construction all affect how the duvet cover feels and performs.

200 TC Percale: Crisp, Smooth and Naturally Cool

Percale is one of the most trusted weaves for premium cotton bedding. It has a crisp, smooth finish and a naturally cool feel against the skin.

When people search for percale vs sateen UK, they are usually trying to understand the difference in feel.

Percale is:

  • Crisp rather than silky
  • Matte rather than shiny
  • Cool and breathable
  • Smooth without feeling heavy
  • Ideal for people who like fresh hotel-style bedding

Sateen is usually:

  • Smoother and more lustrous
  • Slightly heavier in feel
  • Softer and silkier to the touch
  • Less crisp than percale

Neither is automatically better. Percale is often preferred by hot sleepers and people who like a clean, fresh bed. Sateen is often preferred by those who want a silkier, warmer and more draped finish.

Leruum’s 200 TC percale range is designed for customers who want elevated cotton bedding without losing breathability. The Blue Toile de Jouy Cotton Percale Duvet Cover Bedding Set is a good example of this. It combines 200 TC cotton percale with a classic blue and white Toile de Jouy pattern, offering a refined but breathable duvet cover set.

The Pure Percale Bedding Lilac Pink Ditsy Floral Duvet Cover Set is another 200 TC percale option, with a softer floral look and a smooth cotton finish suitable for everyday use.

What About 300 TC Bedding?

300 TC bedding can be a strong choice when made with high-quality cotton and featuring a well-balanced construction. It can feel smoother, denser and more refined than 200 TC bedding.

However, 300 TC is not automatically superior for every sleeper. The fabric must remain breathable, comfortable and durable. If the weave is too dense or the yarn quality is poor, the fabric may trap more heat and lose the fresh cotton feeling many people expect from natural bedding.

At Leruum, we are preparing future 300 TC collections carefully. We do not want a higher number to compromise our core principles:

  • 100% cotton comfort
  • Breathable fabric
  • Healthy sleep
  • Long-lasting quality
  • Responsible sourcing
  • Timeless design
  • Everyday usability

In other words, we will only add 300 TC duvet cover sets when they meet the same standards we expect from our current 145 TC ranforce and 200 TC percale collections.
